You can tell how much someone has stamped by looking at the tip of their belt. If the pattern arrives at the end mid-motif — half an acanthus leaf, three quarters of a rope twist — the layout was worked out with a ruler at the start and hope for the rest.
Getting it to close properly is arithmetic, and it takes about five minutes before you pick up the hammer. This is how we do it.
The mistake almost everyone makes first
A border stamp's repeat pitch is not the same as its width.
Most border stamps are designed to overlap slightly, so the pattern joins into a continuous run instead of sitting as separated tiles. That means the distance from one impression to the next — the pitch — is shorter than the stamp itself.
There are two reasons the published number cannot give you that distance, and both matter more than they sound.
The published size is the overall footprint, and it is rounded. What we list is the bounding box of the die — the box the design sits inside — rounded to something readable. A stamp listed at 21mm may measure 20.6mm or 21.4mm. On one impression that is invisible. It does not stay one impression: chain sixty-nine of them down a belt and a 0.4mm rounding becomes 27mm of drift. The error is not random, so it never cancels out — it accumulates in the same direction on every strike.
The design does not fill the footprint. Inside that bounding box the design occupies less than the whole area, with margin that differs from edge to edge depending on what the design is doing where it terminates — a scroll ending in a tight curl leaves a different margin than a plait running straight off the edge. When you chain two stamps you are not butting footprints together. You are overlapping them until the two designs meet. So the working pitch belongs to that pair of stamps on that leather, not to either stamp on its own.
No published dimension can give you that. You measure it yourself, on scrap, before anything else.
The scrap test
- Case a strip of the same leather you will use for the belt. Same tannage, same thickness — both change how far an impression spreads.
- Strike ten impressions in a row, overlapped exactly as you intend them on the finished piece, so the pattern joins the way you want it to look.
- Pick one identifiable feature — the centre of a knot, the tip of a leaf, the crossing point of a plait — and measure from that feature on the first impression to the same feature on the tenth. That span covers nine pitches.
- Divide by nine.
Measuring across nine pitches rather than one divides your own measurement error by nine as well, and averages out the small variation in how hard you struck each impression. Striking twice is quicker and it is not good enough: whatever you measure gets multiplied by the number of impressions in the run, and your error gets multiplied with it.
That number is your pitch. Write it on the scrap and keep the scrap. It belongs to that stamp on that leather, and it is the only number the rest of this depends on.
Deciding the run
You are not stamping the whole strap. Two parts usually stay clear:
- The buckle end, which folds back on itself. Anything stamped there is either hidden inside the fold or distorted by it.
- The keeper area, if a keeper will sit over the pattern.
The tip end is different: it is the most looked-at part of the belt, so that is where a whole, clean impression has to land. Measure your actual stamping run from the tip back to wherever you have decided the pattern stops.
The division, and what to do with the remainder
Divide the run by the pitch. You will not get a whole number. What matters is how big the leftover is relative to the pitch.
Worked example one — a small remainder
Say a 900mm run, stamped with LT190 Rope Twist Border at 14mm wide, measuring a pitch of 13mm once overlapped.
900 ÷ 13 = 69.2 impressions. Sixty-nine whole impressions take up 897mm and leave 3mm.
Three millimetres spread across sixty-nine joins is 0.04mm each. That is far below what the eye can see, and below what your hand can hold anyway. Absorb it. Walk the pattern down the belt and the error disappears into the run.
Worked example two — a remainder that will show
Same 900mm run, but with LT182 Acanthus Scroll Border at 21mm, measuring a pitch of 20mm.
900 ÷ 20 = 45 impressions exactly. Lucky. Now suppose your run is 910mm instead: 910 ÷ 20 = 45.5. Forty-five whole impressions leave 10mm — half a motif.
Spread over 45 joins that is 0.22mm added to every gap, and on a tight scroll border you will see it: the pattern stops touching and reads as separate stamps rather than a run.
Three ways out, best first:
- Change the run, not the spacing. Move where the pattern stops at the buckle end by 10mm. Nobody will ever know, because there is no reference point up there. This is almost always the right answer.
- Close the gaps instead of opening them. Take the leftover out rather than adding it — 45 impressions plus a little more overlap, tightening 0.22mm per join. Overlapping slightly harder is much less visible than separating, because the pattern still reads continuous.
- Split the difference at both ends. Only if the belt has no obvious start, which a belt almost always does.
The principle underneath all three: adjust the run to suit the stamp. Do not adjust the stamp to suit the run.

Stepping it off with dividers
Arithmetic gets you the number. Dividers get it onto the leather.
Set a pair of wing dividers to your pitch and walk them down the scribed line, tipping heel over toe, counting as you go. When you reach the end you will be out by something. Adjust the dividers by roughly that error divided by the number of steps, and walk it again. Two or three passes and it steps out exactly.
This is worth doing even though you already know the answer on paper, because it converts the number into physical marks you can strike against — and it catches an arithmetic mistake before it costs you a strap.
Scribe the line first
A border that wanders is obvious in a way a filled field never is. The eye reads a straight line as a reference and every deviation against it.
Scribe a light guide line down the strap at a fixed distance from the edge, using a compass or an edge guide riding the belt edge — not a ruler, which will follow any variation in the cut. Register the same part of the stamp against that line on every strike. Pick one: the bottom edge of the head, or a feature in the design. Changing which part you register mid-run is the other common way a border drifts.
Strike from the tip backwards
Start at the tip and work toward the buckle. Any accumulated error — and there is always a little — ends up at the buckle end where the fold hides it, rather than at the tip where it is the first thing anyone sees.
Case the leather properly before you start: damp, not wet, left until the surface has returned close to its natural colour. Work on stone, not a wooden bench. Strike once, square, and do not rock the tool — rocking blurs more impressions than insufficient force ever has. If the leather starts to dry part-way down a long strap, re-case it; an impression struck into dry leather will not match the ones next to it and the mismatch runs the length of the belt.
What usually goes wrong
- Pattern separates toward the end. Pitch was taken from the published size rather than measured across ten real overlapped impressions.
- Border drifts away from the edge. Registered against a ruler instead of the belt edge, or the registration point changed mid-run.
- Impressions get shallower down the strap. The leather dried out. Re-case as you go.
- Half a motif at the tip. Stamped from the buckle end forwards.
Which stamps suit a belt
Anything in border leather stamps is built for this, but size drives the decision more than pattern does. On a standard 38mm strap a 12–14mm border reads as a neat edge detail, while an 18–21mm one becomes the belt's main feature.
